 THE NU-N-U

We look around us and see a world filled with challenges. Some positive and some decidedly negative. The positive ones seem to be few and far between. Adults know how difficult it is to navigate through life's choppy waters. Imagine how difficult it is for our young ones to cope. If they manage to somehow stay ahead of all the curve balls life throws them, they do not end up ahead at all. Indeed, they end up far behind. Not just behind all the other challenged survivors on the planet, but far behind their own God given potential. They fall into hopelessness, darkness, ignorance and fear. They struggle with drugs, violence and low self-esteem. They need to be shown the way.

It is not enough to be concerned with our own biological children. We need to reach out to children who do not have the love and guidance of a strong, centered family. That is why I have dedicated my life to the care, teaching and the lifting up of just such children.

My "NU-N-U" faith based program teaches the children how to have a vision for their future. Of course, the main message is, "You do have a future and you have a right to make it a beautiful one". The first step toward realizing this, is to have a dream of what they want to be when they grow up. The next step is to help them see how special they are and how important it is to love themselves. They are as books filled with blank pages, awaiting the author's story of love, joy and success. This might seem like too much to ask, but if we do not reach for excellence, how will our children expect it or even understand it.

As the children learn to care for themselves, they begin to move outward and learn to truly love and care for each other. They learn to respect each other and to exhibit good manners. We carefully choose affirmations and positive songs to instill in them the message of love and peace. The magic word behind all this learning is "fun". I keep the fun in my "NU-N-U" program by teaching the children to play musical instruments while they sing and dance. We sing African music, R & B, Blues, Pop, Country/Western, Jazz, Positive Rap, Gospel, a touch of Opera and (what would the day be without) Yoddling. They enjoy accompanying themselves on the gourds, shekeres (African gourd hand drum), bells and other percussion instruments.

The children experience a wide variety of art forms. In the past, they have created and produced a play focusing on peacemakers, painted scenery for a puppet show, made shekeres and other instruments to play. This provides the perfect opportunity for the children to learn to work together as a team. Even games, like "Che Che Kule", are fun, while at the same time, motivational. It helps the children realize that we are all connected. We are beautiful people. We are a family of Love, Peace and Harmony.

Periodically, I bring in guest artists such as poets, storytellers, dancers and musicians. This exposes the children to various cultures and different approaches to self expression. It shows them, through up-close examples, the tremendous benefits of a good education and the power they have to create an exciting and prosperous life for themselves.

As a Minister of Healing and Artist in Residence at the C.A. House at the University of Pennsylvania, I escort Penn students into the community and to homeless shelters and after school programs. They share with the children their reasons for going to college, what they study and what type of profession they plan to pursue when they graduate. After this, the children's thinking caps go on and they form plans for their own futures.

Our favorite chants or affirmations are:  "Pump, Pump, Pump up the Love", "I am a child of love now", "Love, Peace and Light".
